Evaluation of LoRaWAN for Internet of Things

There are many technologies present for the internet of things, for instance IEEE 802.15.4. However, IEEE 802.15.4 enables only short range communication. LoRaWAN is specification of a low power wide area network, for battery operated things. LoRaWAN allows bi-directional communication with up to 50 kbps.
This project investigates the capabilities a LoRaWAN radio chip. It will investigate readily available products, and evaluate the performances and compare the results to other technologies, e.g. IEEE 802.15.4. Additionally, an rf module for our TinyTriSOS hardware design is created, which is eventually evaluated.
- Design of a rf module for our TinyTriSOS module based on LoRaWAN.
- Write an application to communicate with the rf module to exchange data and test the capabilities of the rf module.
- Compare the result to an IEEE 802.15.4 communication system.
- Experience with microcontrollers and radio chips is beneficial.
- Programming skills.
