Design and Evaluation of Ultra-Sonic Distance Estimation

Position estimation is a challenging task. In the past various technologies have been employed from received signal strength, connectivity based to time based systems. Among these technologies, time based systems offer high accuracy. Ultra-sonic distance estimation allows precise ranging with an accuracy of several centimeters.


This project aims to design, build and evaluate low cost ultra-sonic distance estimation units. For this task we want to employ ready to use ultra-sonic transducers. In this project, the students will design a PCB board with a low cost ultra-sonic transducer. The ultra-sonic transducer uses USART or another suitable interface to communicate with our wireless sensor platform. The student will provide drivers for the ultra-sonic transducer and evaluate the system. We also aim to measure distances under water.


  • Design and create a PCB and housing for an ultra-sonic transducer
  • Implement software driver modules to communicate with the ultra-sonic transducer
  • Evaluate land and underwater measurements


  • Experience with microcontrollers and radio chips is beneficial.
  • Programming skills.
