Software Defined Radios (SDR) are an important technology for the upcoming Internet of Things as well as the 5G. They offer a flexible radio interface for different radio frequencies, e.g. 900 MHz or 2.4 GHz. In contrast to existing radio modules, processing of the data is done in software.


The Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) from Ettus Research is a flexible platform for SDRs. In this work the possibilities of SDR are investigated and documented. Using existing components (Hardware and Software) a radio transmission via IEEE 802.15.4 or IEEE 802.11 is implemented.

  • Experience with microcontrollers and radio chips is beneficial.
  • Elementary programming skills required (C or Python).
